A style of photograph taken on a film camera which uses the 35mm format.

 

Abstract

Work that uses shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve desired effect, does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality.

 

Acrylic Paint

A type of water-based fast-drying paint.

 

Color

The perceived hue of an object, produced by the manner in which it reflects or emits light into the eye. Also, a substance, such as a dye, pigment, or paint, that conveys a hue.

 

Commission

The request for the creation of a work of art.

 

Composition

The arrangement of the individual elements within a work of art.

 

Contemporary Art

A term loosely used to refer to art of the present day and of the relatively recent past, of an innovatory or avant-garde nature. 

 

Curator

An art expert who manages collections and organizes exhibitions.

 

Curatorial Practice

The practice of designing a physical or virtual space with an intended concept through a variety of media.

 

Edition

A series of identical impressions or prints made from the same image.

 

Emerging Artist

An emerging artist is someone who’s in the early stage of their career, someone who’s caught the eye of an art critic and/or gallery, but hasn’t yet established a solid reputation as an artist amongst art critics, art buyers, and art galleries.

 

Established Artist

An artist who is at a mature stage in his or her career and who has created an extensive body of independent work. An established artist has reached an advanced level of achievement by sustaining a nationally or internationally recognized contribution to the discipline.

 

Form

The implied of shape created by the combination of the various visual elements that make up a work.

 

Landscape

An image of which the primary focus is naturally occurring scenery.

Medium

A word that refers to both to the type of art (e.g. painting, sculpture, printmaking), as well as the materials an artwork is made from.

 

Mid-Career Artist

An artist who has created an independent body of work over a number of years and who has received regional or national recognition through publication or public presentation of his or her work. A Mid-Career Artist has had a significant number of solo exhibitions at significant galleries and museums, located nationally or internationally, rather than locally.

 

Minimalism

A style that uses pared-down design elements.

 

Mixed Media

Artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials.

 

Painting

The practice of applying paint to a surface, usually with a brush.

 

Palette

The assortment of colors used by an artist in the making of a work of art.

 

Photography

The art of creating an image that is recorded by exposing a photosensitive surface to light.

 

Print

Multiple copies of an original design.
